magnesium sulphate An agent which, when administered intraveinously, may slow the ventricular response to rapid atrial fibrillation, and act in tandem with pharmacotherapy to decrease the heart rate attributed to intracellular magnesium depletion seen in ethanol abuse, renal failure, in hypokalaemia, hyponatraemia, or in patients receiving digoxin or diuretics.magnesium sulphate A drug formerly used by mouth or by ENEMA to treat constipation and by injection to treat magnesium deficiency. Was also much used by local application in a paste or poultice to draw water from wounds. Also known as Epsom salts.
