Lassiter Coast

Lassiter Coast

part of the eastern coast of the Antarctic Peninsula of Antarctica, between Mackintosh Cove in the north and the Filchner Ice Shelf in the south. The coast measures about 240 km long. Most of its area is occupied by an ice shelf and outlet glaciers and by the continental ice sheet. In places, nunataks rise to 1,800 m. Lassiter Coast is blocked year-round by the drifting ice of the Weddell Sea. It was discovered and explored by United States antarctic expeditions in 1940 and 1947. It is named in honor of a pilot who as part of the 1947 expedition did an extensive amount of aerial photography.
