live data

n (Computer Science) computing data that is still relevant

live data

live data

[′līv ′dad·ə] (computer science) Actual data that are employed during the final testing of a computer system, as opposed to test data.

live data

(1)Data that is written to be interpreted and takes overprogram flow when triggered by some un-obvious operation, suchas viewing it. One use of such hacks is to break security. For example, some smart terminals have commands that allow oneto download strings to program keys; this can be used to writelive data that, when listed to the terminal, infects it with asecurity-breaking virus that is triggered the next time ahapless user strikes that key. For another, there are somewell-known bugs in vi that allow certain texts to sendarbitrary commands back to the machine when they are simplyviewed.

live data

(2)In C, data that includes pointers to functions(executable code).

live data

(3)An object, such as a trampoline, that is constructed onthe fly by a program and intended to be executed as code.

live data

(4)Actual real-world data, as opposed to "test data". Forexample, "I think I have the record deletion module finished.""Have you tried it out on live data?" This usage usuallycarries the connotation that live data is more fragile andmust not be corrupted, or bad things will happen. So a moreappropriate response to the above claim might be: "Well, makesure it works perfectly before we throw live data at it." Theimplication here is that record deletion is something prettysignificant, and a haywire record-deletion module running amokon live data would probably cause great harm.
