Mavera-Un-Nahr
(also Ma wara al-Nahr or Transoxiana), the medieval name for the regions along the right bank of the Amu Darya. The name was first used during the Arab conquest in the seventh and eighth centuries. The term was subsequently used to designate the regions between the Amu Darya and the Syr Darya. The region’s oldest and largest cities are Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khodzhent (present-day Leninabad).
