Mauritshuis

Mauritshuis

a palace in The Hague, on Hofvijver; 17th-century Dutch architectural monument and a museum (Royal Picture Gallery). The Mauritshuis is a model of Dutch classicism. It was built for Maurice of Nassau, Prince of Orange, from 1633 to 1635 by the architect P. Post, who used the plan of Jan van Campen. The museum, which opened in 1820, developed around the picture collection of William V of Orange. The small yet very select Mauritshuis collection contains works of the Dutch school (Rembrandt, J. Vermeer), the Netherlandish school (Rogier van der Weyden, H. Memling), and the Flemish school (P. P. Rubens, J. Jordaens).
