Liu Chih-Tan

 

Born 1902, in the district of Paoan, Shensi Province; died February 1936, in the village of Sanchiaouchen, Shansi Province. Prominent member of the Communist Party of China.

Liu Chih-tan was one of the leaders of the armed struggle against the Kuomintang regime in northwest China. In 1928 he led a peasant revolt in Shensi Province, and after the rebellion was suppressed he worked for the party in the northern regions of Shensi. He was instrumental in organizing the XXVI Corps of the Red Army of China in 1932 and in establishing a revolutionary base on the border of Shensi, Kansu, and Ningsia provinces. After the main forces of the Red Army arrived there from Chianghsi Province in the fall of 1935, Liu Chih-tan was appointed deputy chairman of the revolutionary military council of northwest China. He died in battle.
