Liubomir Georgiev Miletich

Born Jan 1, 1863, in Štip, Yugoslavia; died June 1, 1937, in Sofia, Bulgaria. Bulgarian philologist. Member (1898) and president (1926–37) of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Professor and one of the founders of the first Sofia school of higher learning (1888), which later became the University of Sofia (1904).

Miletich studied in Zagreb and Prague. He wrote works on the history of the Bulgarian language (The Article in Bulgarian and Russian, 1901), Bulgarian dialectology (East Bulgarian Dialects, 1905; The Rhodope Dialects of Bulgarian, 1911), and the history and customs of the Slavic populations of Bulgaria and neighboring regions (Greece, Yugoslavia, and Rumania). Miletich asserted that specific features of modern Bulgarian, such as analytic grammatical categories and the postpositive article, were the result of the independent development of tendencies inherited from Proto-Slavic. He was a foreign corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1901).
