Liubavskii, Matvei Kuz’mich
Born Aug. 1(13), 1860, in the village of Bol’shie Mozhary, present-day Sarai Raion, Riazan’ Oblast; died Nov. 22, 1936, in Ufa. Soviet historian; academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1929; corresponding member, 1917).
Liubavskii graduated from the department of history and philology at Moscow University in 1882. He wrote his master’s dissertation, Oblast Division and Local Administration of the Lithuanian-Russian State at the Time of the Publication of the Lithuanian Statute, in 1892 and his doctoral dissertation, TheLithuanian-Russian Sejm, in 1900. Professor at Moscow University from 1901 to 1917, Liubavskii became rector of the university in 1911 and chairman of the Moscow Society of Russian History and Antiquities in 1913. He is the author of the books The Historical Geography of Russia in Connection With Colonization (1909) and Lectures on Ancient Russian History to the End of the 16th Century (3rd ed., 1918). Liubavskii was a research associate at the Bashkir Scientific Research Institute of National Culture in Ufa from 1931 to 1936. Owing to the wealth of factual material, the main works of Liubavskii, a student and follower of V. O. Kliuchevskii, have retained their value to this day.
