Gudzii, Nikolai Kallinikovich

 

Born Apr. 21 (May 3), 1887, in Mogilev-Podol’skii; died Oct. 29. 1965, in Moscow. Soviet literary scholar; academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1945). Graduate of the University of Kiev (1911). Professor at Moscow University (from 1922).

Gudzii headed the department of ancient Russian literature at the A. M. Gorky Institute of World Literature (1938–47) and the department of Russian literature (1945–52) and the department of ancient Ukrainian literature (1952–65) at the T. G. Shevchenko Institute of Literature of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. His principal research was devoted to ancient Russian literature, the works of L. N. Tolstoy, and Russian and Ukrainian literature of the 18th to the early 20th centuries, as well as to textual criticism and the history of philology. Gudzii was one of the editors of the jubilee edition of Tolstoy’s Complete Collected Works. He was awarded the Order of Lenin, two other orders, and various medals.
