MEWA
MEWA
Multiple Employer Welfare Association. A group of employers who join to purchase group health insurance, often self-funded to avoid state mandates and insurance regulation.By virtue of ERISA (Employee Retirement Income Security Act), such entities are little regulated, if at all. Many MEWAs have enabled small employers to obtain cost-effective health coverage, while some MEWAs have not had the financial resources to withstand the risk of medical costs and have failed, leaving the members without insurance or recourse.
