[‚mets·gə·rē′ā·lēz] (botany) An order of liverworts in the subclass Jungermannidae, class Hepaticopsida, distinguished by archegonia produced behind a growing apex, a flat elongated gametophyte with no tissue differentiation or surface pores and, less commonly, a stem with two rows of leaves.
