Burkhanov, Mutal’ Muzainovich
Born Apr. 22 (May 5), 1916, in Bukhara. Soviet composer and public figure. Honored Art Worker of the Uzbek SSR (1964).
In 1949, Burkhanov graduated from the Moscow Conservatory, where he studied composition with S. N. Vasilenko. He composed the first Uzbek polyphonic choral works, including six a cappella choral pieces based on folk melodies (1954), as well as ’Odes to Lenin’s Party” (1959), symphonic works, songs and art songs, and music for plays and movies. Burkhanov received the Khamza State Prize of the Uzbek SSR (1959 and 1970), the Order of Lenin, and various medals.
