(īl`härt mĭch`ərlĭkh), 1794–1863, German chemist. He was professor at Berlin from 1822. Noted for his discovery of the principle of isomorphismisomorphism, of minerals, similarity of crystal structure between two or more distinct substances. Sodium nitrate and calcium sulfate are isomorphous, as are the sulfates of barium, strontium, and lead. Crystals of isomorphous substances are almost identical.
