Littoral Deposits
Littoral Deposits
deposits in the littoral zone. They are extremely varied in composition, consisting of boulders, pebbles of varying degrees of roundness, gravel, sand, and silt sediments. A high content of organic remains is often noted. Present-day littoral deposits are found only within a narrow zone. Ancient littoral deposits formed when shorelines moved. During the transgression of the sea the littoral deposits were buried under other types of marine deposits. They are well preserved in sections, occurring on heavily water-eroded surfaces of more ancient rocks or on continental deposits.
