metrorrhagia[‚mē·trə′rā·jē·ə] (medicine) Uterine bleeding during the intermenstrual cycle. Also known as intermenstrual flow; polymenorrhea. Metrorrhagia uterine bleeding that occurs irregularly— that is, with disturbance of the menstrual cycle. It is observed in many types of disorders that are obstetrical (abortion, hydatid mole, ectopic pregnancy) or gynecological (polyposis of the uterine mucosa, cervical erosion, submucosal fibromyomas, sarcomas, cancer of the sex organs). In some cases metrorrhagia is the most clearly expressed symptom of disorders of the menstrual cycle. The cause of this bleeding is disruption of blood circulation in the uterine wall as a result of disturbance of the regulatory mechanisms in the central nervous system, which leads to a disturbance of the endocrine function of the ovaries. Treatment consists in removing the cause of metrorrhagia. metrorrhagiaenUK
