maturity index

[mə′chu̇r·əd·ē ‚in‚deks] (geology) A measure of the progress of a clastic sediment in the direction of chemical or mineralogic stability; for example, a high ratio of quartz + cherts to feldspar + rock fragments indicates a highly mature sediment.
