Nikolai Iossa

Iossa, Nikolai Aleksandrovich

 

Born May 7 (19), 1845, in Artinskii Zavod, Perm’ Province; died Dec. 31,1916 (Jan. 13, 1917). Russian metallurgist; son of A. A. Iossa.

Upon graduation from the Corps of Mining Engineers Institute in 1865, Iossa worked at factories in the Urals, where he successfully continued the experiments begun by his father on the study and use of the Bessemer process. After 1871 he worked at the St. Petersburg Mining Institute (as professor after 1882). He was director of the Mining Department from 1900 to 1907. In 1907 he was chairman of the Mining Council and of the Scientific Mining Committee. He retired in 1913. In 1910 he became the first chairman of the Russian Metallurgical Society.
