Nevinnomyssk Canal

 

an irrigation canal in Stavropol’ Krai, RSFSR, that brings water from the Kuban’ River into the Egorlyk River; a part of the Kuban’-Egorlyk water system. The Nevinnomyssk Canal serves much of Stavropol’ Krai, the southeastern raions of Rostov Oblast, and the northern raions of Krasnodar Krai. Construction of the canal, begun in 1936, was interrupted by the Great Patriotic War of 1941–45 and was resumed in 1944. The Nevinnomyssk Canal commenced operation in 1948. The canal 49.2 km in length, was designed to admit 75 cubic meters of water per second through its main installations. It originates at Nevinnomyssk, where the channel of the Kuban’ is dammed. The Svistukhinskaia and Sengileevskaia hydroelectric power plants are located along the canal.
