Litke
(1) An island in Baidaratskaia Bay, Kara Sea, off the west coast of the Yamal Peninsula. Area, approximately 120 sq km; elevations, up to 40 m. The shallow Mutnyi Strait separates Litke from the mainland; its width is 3–10 km. Moss and lichen tundra covers Litke Island, which is marsh-ridden in places.
(2) An island in southeastern Zemlia Frantsa Iosifa Archipelago. Length, 5 km; width, 2 km; maximum elevation, 314 m. It is covered with glaciers. Both islands were named in honor of F. P. Litke.
Litke
a line icebreaker of the Soviet arctic fleet, built in 1909 in Great Britain. Length, 83 m; width, 14.5 m; displacement, 4,850 tons. It was named in honor of F. P. Litke. Commanded by Captain N. M. Nikolaev and under the scientific leadership of V. Iu. Vize, the Litke in 1934 completed the first continuous voyage from east to west along the Northern Sea Route. The ship was removed from service in 1958.
