Madira Bickel Mound State Archeological Site
Location:Approximately 1.5 miles off US 19 , in Palmetto; entrance is about 1 mile south of I-275.
Facilities:Under development. Picnic tables are available now; nature trails and kiosks with historical information are planned.
Activities:Picnicking.
Special Features:Site was the first in Florida to be designated a StateArcheological Site, in 1948. The flat-topped ceremonial mound iscomposed of sand, shell, and village debris and is 20 feet high.Excavations have disclosed at least three periods of Native Americancultures, with the earliest dating back 2,000 years.
