Mat Surface

Mat Surface

a surface with microscopic irregularities whose dimensions are close to the wavelengths of visible light (400-700 nanometers). When light strikes a mat surface it is reflected diffusely—that is, it is scattered in all directions (whereas from a smooth surface it is reflected regularly, or specularly). Here Lambert’s law is approximately satisfied for a broad range of angles of incident light (excluding angles that correspond to regular reflection and refraction, and also large angles, in excess of 60°-70°).
