Artamonov, Nikolai Dmitrievich

 

Born Oct. 26 (Nov. 7), 1840, in Moscow; died 1918, in Petrograd. Russian geodesist and general.

Artamonov graduated from the geodetic division of the Academy of the General Staff in 1864 and then worked at the academy. He edited maps in the military-topographic department of the main staff headquarters. From 1886 he was the head of the military-topographic college. He was an honorary member of the Russian Astronomical Society (from 1909) and the Russian Geographic Society (from 1917).
