Matrona

(1) In ancient Rome a freeborn, legally married woman. In the broad sense of the word, the mother of a family, a respectable woman.

(2) In the plural, matronae or matres, female deities in ancient Rome and the provinces (particularly Gaul, Germany, and Britain), considered the protectresses of a given locality or tribal commune.
