Tol’skii, Nikolai Alekseevich
Born Jan. 19 (31), 1832, in Lipetsk; died Feb. 3 (15), 1891, in Moscow. Russian physician. One of the founders of pediatrics in Russia.
Tol’skii received his medical degree from Moscow University in 1853. Beginning in 1873 he was a professor in the department of obstetrics, gynecology, and pediatrics at Moscow University; in 1880–81 he was also dean of the university’s faculty of medicine. He introduced a course in gynecology and founded the university’s first department of gynecology. In 1886, Tol’skii established the university’s first pediatric clinic from G. A. Zakhar’in’s clinic of internal medicine.
Tol’skii founded Moscow University’s department of pediatrics in 1888, and in 1890–91 supervised the construction of a pediatrics clinic with a quarantine wing. He reorganized the university’s course on children’s diseases, adding material on embryology and on “major deviations from the norm in fetal development.” Tol’skii’s students included N. P. Gundobin, N. F. Filatov, and V. F. Snegirev.
