Motor-Generator Unit

(also motor-generator), an installation consisting of a mechanically interconnected electric motor and current generator. Motor-generator units are used to convert one kind of electric current to another kind (mainly alternating current to direct current) and to convert the phase number and the frequency. They are used as a power supply for electrolytic baths and in metallurgical and other industrial plants. In the 1960’s. motor-generator units began to be replaced by the more economical and reliable static semiconductor converters.
