National Commissioning Board

A body set up as part of the restructuring of primary care in the UK, for the dissolution of primary care trusts (PCTs) and strategic health authorities (SHAs). The NCB is designed to provide national leadership for quality improvement through commissioning, helping to standardise best practice through guidelines, designing model contracts, tariff and financial incentive models and involving users. 
National Commissioning Board duties
• Commissioning dentistry, community pharmacy and primary ophthalmic services;
• Calculate practice-level budgets and allocate these directly to GP consortia;
• Holding consortia accountable for stewardship of NHS resources and for outcomes of services they commission;
• Take over the Care Quality Commission responsibility of assessing NHS commissioners.
