The region, which may have been inhabited since the 7th cent. B.C., is rich in archaeological remains. Muslim rulers (16th–18th cent.) destroyed many Hindu temples in the city and erected mosques.Mathura(Muttra) a city on the Jumna River in northern India, in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Population, 140,500 (1971). Mathura is a transportation junction. Vegetable oil and textiles are produced there, and the city is a metalworking center.
