Nevelskoi
Nevel’skoi
a mountain in the central Vostochnyi Sakhalin Mountains, on Sakhalin Island, Sakhalin Oblast, RSFSR. Maximum elevation, 1,428 m. It is composed of sandstone and clay and Mesozoic schist. The slopes are covered with spruce and fir taiga, and the ridges have a cedar ground cover. The Poronai River rises on the western slope of the mountain.
Nevel’skoi
a gulf on the western coast of Sakhalin Island, on the side of the Tatar Strait. Width at entrance, about 80 km; depth, up to 100 m. It is fed by numerous small rivers. The semidiurnal tides have a range of about 1 m. Kholmsk and Nevel’sk are ports on the gulf. It was named in honor of G. I. Nevel’skoi.
Nevel’skoi
a strait between the continent of Asia and Sakhalin Island that connects the Tatar Strait with the Amur estuary. Length, about 56 km; narrowest width, approximately 8 km. Channel depth, up to 7.2 m. The strait is covered with ice from the end of January through March. The sea route from the Sea of Japan to the Sea of Okhotsk passes through Nevel’skoi Strait.
