A dairy-products cannery combine and the Metallist Plant are located in Nevel’. The city produces sewn goods, shoes, and furniture. It was first mentioned in the will of Ivan the Terrible as one of the cities founded during his reign. After it was finally joined to Russia in 1772, Nevel’ was a district city of Pskov Province, and after 1802 of Vitebsk Province.
