Nikola Dimitrov Petkov

Petkov, Nikola Dimitrov

Born 1889 in Sofia; died Sept. 23, 1947. Bulgarian political figure.

From 1943 to 1945, Petkov represented the Bulgarian Agrarian People’s Union (BAPU) in the National Committee of the Fatherland Front. As minister without portfolio (1944-45) in the first government of the Fatherland Front, he vigorously opposed the democratic measures of the people’s power. From 1945 to 1947 he headed the right wing of the BAPU, which split off from the Fatherland Front and with the reactionary part of the Social Democratic Party formed an opposition to the people’s government. For his reactionary activity and attempt to organize a plot to overthrow the people’s power, Petkov was convicted by a people’s court and executed.
