Mathematics Institutes

scientific institutions that conduct research in mathematics and its applications. In the USSR nearly all the mathematics institutes are part of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR or of the academies of sciences of the Union republics. The Academy of Sciences of the USSR includes the V. A. Steklov Institute of Mathematics, the Institute of Applied Mathematics, the Computer Center, the Institute of Mathematics of the Siberian Division, the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of the Urals Center, and the Computer Center of the Siberian Division.

Research centers in mathematics at the academies of sciences of the Union republics are either a constituent part of institutes of broader scope or are independent institutes. The number of institutes of the latter type is rising; as a rule, such institutes are separated from the more general institutes.

The following lists the institutes of the academies of sciences of the Union republics in existence at the beginning of 1974: the Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (founded 1934), the A. M. Razmadze Tbilisi Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of the Georgian SSR (founded 1935), the V. I. Romanovskii Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of the Uzbek SSR (founded 1943), the Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR (founded 1955), the Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of the Byelorussian SSR (founded 1955), the Institute of Physics and Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of the Lithuanian SSR (founded 1956), the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR (founded 1959), the Institute of Physics and Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of the Kirghiz SSR (founded 1960), the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Center of the Academy of Sciences of the Moldavian SSR (founded 1964), the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR (founded 1965), the Institute of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (founded 1970), and the Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of the Tadzhik SSR (founded 1973).

In socialist countries mathematics institutes are generally part of academies of sciences, and in capitalist countries they are usually part of universities.
