(full name, Institute of Mathematics of the Siberian Division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR), a Soviet research institute. Located in Novosibirsk, it was founded in 1957. Its tasks are to examine important problems in mathematics and develop methods of the applications of mathematics. The principal areas of research are algebra and mathematical logic, geometry, topology, probability theory, the theory of differential equations, the theory of functions and functional analysis, theoretical physics, mathematical economics, and theoretical cybernetics. There is a graduate program. The institute publishes collections of papers, including Algebra i logika (Algebra and Logic; since 1962), Optimal’noe planirovanie (Optimal Planning; since 1964), and Diskretnyi analiz (Discrete Analysis; since 1963).
