Name Origin: From a Salish (Flathead) Indian word whose meaning is in dispute; possibly 'feared water,' 'at the stream of surprise and ambush,' or 'river of awe'; believed to refer to Hell Gate Canyon where Blackfeet Indians ambushed the Salish
