(nē`hämä), city (1990 pop. 129,149), Ehime prefecture, N Shikoku, Japan. It is a commercial port and a manufacturing and mining center, producing copper and chemical products.Niihama
a city and port in Japan, located in the northern part of Shikoku Island in Ehime Prefecture, on the Inland Sea of Japan. Population, 126,000 (1970). Niihama produces chemicals and machine tools; a petrochemicals combine, a copper smelter, and an alumina plant also operate there. Copper from the Besshiyama mines, located south of Niihama, is exported through the port.
