Established: 1975.
Location:Southern Mississippi, near the Gulf coast.
Facilities:Visitor center, viewing sites, hiking trails.
Activities:Educational programs.
Special Features:Mississippi sandhill cranes are a critically-endangered subspecies found nowhere else in the wild except on and adjacent to the Mississippi Sandhill Crane NWR. Only about 120 individuals remain, including about 20 breeding pairs.
Habitats: Four separate parcels comprising more than 19,000 acres of wet pine savannas, pine scrub, forested swamps, and tidal marshes.
Access: Most of the refuge is closed to the public; the visitor center is open Monday through Friday from 8am to 3pm.
Wild life: Endangered Mississippi sandhill crane. Also provides habitat for songbirds, harriers, and red-tailed hawks.
