Macocha

a karst gorge in the Moravsky Kras (Moravian Karst) region in Czechoslovakia. Depth, 138 m. It arose as a result of the collapse of the roof of a large karst cave formed in Devonian limestone. The walls are craggy and overhanging. In the roof there is an enormous funnel-shaped opening. The underground Punkva River, which forms several lakes, flows along the floor of Macocha. The gorge is a popular tourist attraction; boat excursions which supplement tours of the grottoes of the land part of the cave are conducted in the flooded parts of Macocha.
