Macmanus, Arthur

Born 1889; died Feb. 27, 1927. Figure in the workers’ movement of Great Britain. Metalworker by trade.

MacManus took an internationalist stand during World War I. He was one of the initiators of the shop steward movement. In 1917 he became chairman of the first council of shop stewards. He was chairman of a united committee of shop stewards from May 1917 and chairman of the National Administrative Council of the Shop Stewards’ and Workers’ Committee Movement from September 1918. In 1920 he became one of the founders of the Communist Party of Great Britain. He participated in the Third Congress of the Comintern (1921) and was elected a member of the Executive Committee of the Comintern. He is buried in Red Square in Moscow.
