Meteorological Journals

 

(more precisely, meteorological and climatological journals), periodical scientific publications that deal with problems in meteorology, climatology, and hydrology.

In the USSR the most well-known and popular journals are Meteorologiia i gidrologiia (Meteorology and Hydrology; since 1935), Izvestiia AN SSSR: Fizika atmosfery i okeana (Proceedings of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR: Atmospheric and Oceanic Physics; since 1965), Referativnyizhurnal: Meteorologiia i klimatologiia (Journal of Abstracts: Meteorology and Climatology, in the volumes Referativnyi zhurnal: Geofizika [Journal of Abstracts: Geophysics], since 1957, and Referativnyi zhurnal: Geografiia [Journal of Abstracts: Geography], since 1956). Climatological problems are also dealt with in Izvestiia Vsesoiuznogo geograficheskogo obshchestva (Proceedings of the All-Union Geographical Society; since 1865) and Izvestiia AN SSSR: Seriia geograficheskaia (Proceedings of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR: Geographical Series; since 1937).

The principal foreign meteorological journals include Tellus (Stockholm, since 1949); Archiv fur Meteorologie, Geophysik und Bioklimatologie, Series A and Series B (Vienna, since 1948); Boundary-Layer Meteorology (Dordrecht, since 1971); International Journal of Biometeorology (Leiden, since 1957); and Beitrage zur Physik der freien Atmosphare (Federal Republic of Germany, Frankfurt, since 1904). Among the meteorological journals in the USA are Journal of Atmospheric Sciences (Lancaster, since 1944), Journal of Applied Meteorology (Lancaster, since 1962), Monthly Weather Review (Washington, since 1873), and Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (Easton, Pa., since 1920). Journals in Great Britain include the Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society (London, since 1873) and Meteorological Magazine (London, since 1866). In France there is La Meteorologie (Paris, since 1925), and in Austria, Wetter und Leben (Weather and Life, Vienna, since 1947). Others include, in the Federal Republic of Germany, Meteorologische Rundschau (Bonn, since 1947); in Italy, Rivista di Meteorologia Aeronautica (Rome, since 1937); in Japan, Kisho-cho Kenkyu Jiho (Journal of Meteorological Researches, Tokyo, since 1949) and Kisho Shushi (Journal of the Meteorological Society of Japan, Tokyo, since 1882); in India, Indian Journal of Meteorology and Geophysics (New Delhi, since 1950); in the German Democratic Republic, Zeitschrift fur Meteorologie (Potsdam, since 1951) and Angewandte Meteorologie (Applied Meteorology, Berlin, since 1951); in Czechoslovakia, Meteorologicke Zpravy (Prague, since 1948); in Hungary, Idojdrds (Weather, Budapest, since 1897); and in Bulgaria, Khidrologiia i meteorologiia (Sofia, since 1952).
