Meteorological Code
Meteorological Code
a system of conventional symbols that is used to exchange meteorological information (the results of observations on the condition of the atmosphere at various levels which are made at meteorological and aerological stations, including the data of weather radars and man-made earth satellites, and the analysis of weather maps). For each kind of information there is a special form of code consisting of symbolic letters or groups of letters (usually five-unit groups), which are converted into numbers that indicate the magnitude or the state of the meteorological elements being described. By using the meteorological code it becomes possible to represent weather information in the form of numerical summaries that are suitable for international and country-wide transmission by radio and wire communication facilities as well as for processing on electronic computers.
