Mackie's syndrome

Mackie's syndrome

A corneal disorder featuring small areas of epithelial drying and disruption near the margin on the nasal and the temporal side, sometimes with the formation of a distinct depression (dellen). The condition, which is common, is the result of abnormal blinking in wearers of hard contact lenses. If neglected, it may progress to PINGUECULA and even PTERYGIUM. Also known as three and nine o'clock keratopathy. (Ian A. Mackie, b. 1927, London consultant ophthalmologist).
