Antipov-Karataev, Ivan Nikolaevich

Born Sept. 1 (13), 1888, in the village of Teneevo, Sterlitamak District, Ufa Province; died July 3, 1965, in Baku. Soviet pedologist. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Tadzhik SSR (1951). Member of the CPSU from 1946. Graduated from Moscow State University (1927).

From 1926 to 1965, Antipov-Karataev was a scientific worker at the V. V. Dokuchaev Soil Institute in Moscow. From 1936 to 1951 he was scientific director of the Vakhsh land reclamation station and since 1951 scientific director of the Institute of Pedology of the Academy of Sciences of the Tadzhik SSR. His work focused on the study of the absorptive power of soils, the nature of soil aggregates and soil solutions, and the development of methods for the fundamental improvement of solonetzic soils. He received the Dokuchaev Prize in 1964. For his work Soils of Bulgaria (1960) he was awarded the Dimitrov Prize and the order “For Civil Services” by the government of Bulgaria. He has been awarded four Soviet orders, as well as a number of medals.
