Lipset, Seymour M. Lipset, Seymour M. (1922-) leading US political sociologist who, after his early work on radicalism, and on democracy and oligarchy in TRADE UNIONS (Union Democracy, 1956), has become best known for a number of influential general works on the social bases of liberal democracy and ‘non-democracy’, including Political Man (1960), The First New Nation (1963), and Party Systems and Voter Alignments (with S.
