neutral conductor

neutral conductor

[′nü·trəl kən′dək·tər] (electricity) A conductor of a polyphase circuit or of a single-phase, three-wire circuit which is intended to have a potential such that the potential differences between it and each of the other conductors are approximately equal in magnitude and are also equally spaced in phase.

neutral conductor

1. In an electric circuit consisting of three or more conductors, the electric conductor that usually is so energized that the voltages between it and the other conductors are equal in magnitude. 2. In a three-phase three-wire electrical circuit: a conductor whose potential differences between it and each of the other conductors are equal in magnitude and equally spaced in phase.
