The trunk of the Landrace is torpedo-shaped; the head is small and the hams are well developed. The boars weigh 250–300 kg; the sows, 200–220 kg. The sows bear from ten to 12 young per farrow; milk production is 70–80 kg. When fattened for bacon, the young pigs weigh 100 kg at 189 days, the average daily gain being 707 g at 3.9 units of fodder per kg weight increase. The carcass is 55–56 percent meat, and the quality of the bacon is high. Purebred Landraces are raised in the Latvian SSR, the Lithuanian SSR and the Ukrainian SSR and in Novgorod, Kaluga, and other oblasts. The Landrace is used for commercial crossing with other breeds. The Danish Landrace is distributed in Sweden, Norway, Finland, Great Britain, the USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and Brazil. |
