Matagalpa

a city in Nicaragua, administrative center of the department of Matagalpa. Population, 22,600; 74,700 in the metropolitan area (1969). It is the center of a coffee-growing and coffee-processing area. There is cottage manufacture of consumer goods such as footwear and soap.
