Nonbusiness Expense Deduction

Nonbusiness Expense Deduction

An expense that a company may remove from its taxable income even though it is not directly related to its operations. For example, while employee salaries are a business expense, sales taxes are non-business. The latter may be taken as a nonbusiness expense deduction. There are limits on nonbusiness expense deductions. For example, one may not deduct expenses from a trip unless it relates to one's business.
