Mach - The scale measuring the speed of an object or fluid relative to the speed of sound is named for philosopher/physicist Ernst Mach (1838-1916), who researched thermodynamics; Mach is the ratio of the speed of something to the speed of sound in the surrounding medium.See also related terms for measuring.ThesaurusNoun | 1. | Mach - Austrian physicist and philosopher who introduced the Mach number and who founded logical positivism (1838-1916)Ernst Mach | TranslationsMach

It is also used as a speed unit. The speed of sound, or Mach 1, is equal to 340.5 m/s, 661 knots, 761 miles per hour, or 1225.5 km/h at sea level under standard conditions, and it decreases with altitude. Above the tropopause (about 36,090 ft, or 11 km), Mach 1 is 295.5 m/s, 574 knots, 658 miles per hour, or 1063.2 km/h. Named after Ernst Mach (1838–1916).MachAn operating system kernel under development atCarnegie-Mellon University to support distributed and parallelcomputation. Mach is designed to support computingenvironments consisting of networks of uniprocessors andmultiprocessors. Mach is the kernel of the OSF/1.Mach
Mach (mahk), Ernst, scientist in Hapsburg Empire, 1838-1916. See: Mach band, Mach number. CASP8 A gene on chromosome 2q33-q34 that encodes a protein belonging to the cysteine-aspartic acid protease (caspase) family which, once activated by proteolytic processing, plays a central role in the execution phase of cell apoptosis, as well as various stages of embryological development. CASP8 is an initiator-type caspase, which is activated by, and interacts with, upstream adaptor molecules through CARD and DED protein–protein interaction domains; it is involved in the programmed cell death induced by Fas and various apoptotic stimuli. It is highly expressed in peripheral blood leukocytes and in the spleen, thymus and liver. Molecular pathology CASP8 has been detected in the insoluble fraction of affected brain regions in Huntington disease, suggesting a role in neurodegenerative diseases.MACH
