an effusive rock similar in chemical composition to granite. The term “rhyolite” is used as an equivalent for liparite outside the Soviet Union. Liparite occurs as lava flows, volcanic domes, cinereous deposits, and ignimbrite strata. It generally exhibits a high glass content, but nearly holocrystalline varieties are also known to exist; it often contains porphyritic phenocrysts.

Liparite occurs widely in all volcanic regions of the world; it is used for paving roads and for construction purposes.
