Location:20 miles south of Saint Louis, off I-55 Exit 186 in Jefferson County.

Special Features:Site contains the Kimmswick Bone Bed, an important archeological andpaleontological site where the bones of mastodons and other now-extinctanimals were first found in the 1800s. In 1979 scientists excavated astone spear point made by hunters of the Clovis culture (14,000-10,000years ago), providing the first solid evidence of the coexistence ofpeople and mastodons. A museum at the site displays ancient artifacts,fossils, and a full-size replica of a mastodon skeleton.
