Macdonnel, Joseph Patrick

Born circa 1845; died January 1906. A leader of the Irish national liberation movement and the international labor movement.

MacDonnel was active in the Irish petit bourgeois organization known as Sinn Fein, as well as in Irish trade unions; he suffered imprisonment for his activities. In 1871 he became a member of the General Council of the First International and corresponding secretary for Ireland. Defending the line of K. Marx and F. Engels, MacDonnel demanded that the work of the British Federal Council of the International be founded on revolutionary proletarian principles. In December 1872 he emi-grated to the USA, where he became one of the leaders of the Irish Sections of the First International. In 1876, MacDonnel was one of the founders of the Socialist Labor Party of the USA. From 1878 to 1881 he was one of the leaders of the International Labor Union.
